Do you remember your favorite book from childhood?

I began learning to read when I was around 3 years old. One of my core memories of this time is proving my favorite uncle wrong when he said I couldn’t do it. He handed me his newspaper and I read it out loud to him. Now, don’t get me wrong, I couldn’t read every word but I got more than enough right to prove him wrong.

Having said all that, I have been a voracious reader all my life. You’d seldom find me without a book in my hand. Now that my books are electronic, I have many to choose from all in the palm of my hand.

Now on to my favorite childhood book….it’s actually a series that I fell in love with in the 5th grade.

The Dark Is Rising series by Susan Cooper. These books have so many things all rolled into one. The freedom of childhood in earlier times when the world was a bit less scary. Magic, Arthurian legend, superstitions, and a fun adventurous plot line. It starts with Over Sea, Under Stone and introduces some of the main characters and a few side characters that will reappear later.

These books were written from 1965 to 1977 and I think they are still great. I recently bought them all on audiobook to read them again. If you like a good light book, give them a try, even if they are young adult/children’s books.

For me it’s more of what author. Jane Austen. I have and will read her books over and over again for the rest of my life. She writes characters with real human flaws and wit and personality. She is the main one. But there are other books that I have read multiple times.

So, I am the stereotypical reader of my gender. I like romance books of all types, from cozy to spicy to dark. I have a kindle unlimited subscription and I read voraciously. I definitely get my money’s worth. My current multi-read is Lights Out by Navessa Allen. It’s a dark romance with a golden retriever male lead. I keep coming back to read because it’s just so good. I plan to look up more by this author.

Amanda M. Lee is a cozy romance author with a paranormal theme in her books. I’ve read almost everything she’s published through my unlimited subscription. She has several series that she puts out at the same time on a rotating schedule. Her books are great reads, quirky and fun.

These are just two of the many authors I’ve read over my life. When I was younger I was heavily into Dean Koontz and Stephen King. As I got a little older I read most of Nora Roberts bibliography. I’ve always felt drawn to the magical and paranormal books. I’ve read the entire Sword of Truth and Wheel of Time series, as well as the Sookie Stackhouse series. The Caraval series is really good too. There are just so many books I like.

My favorite childhood read was The Dark is Rising series. I still go back and read it occasionally. I highly recommend this series, especially if the child is into magic and Arthurian legend.
